The Women's Garden Project

FACE is sponsoring a wonderful local initiative that helps women with a refugee background living in our area.

The Women's Garden Project is based in Tooting Community Garden (run by Transition Town Tooting) at 5 North Drive, Tooting Bec SW16 1RL, and offers weekly social activities for women with a refugee background living in South London - a friendly environment where they can practice their English, learn new skills, enjoy gardening, and be supported with all of the challenges they face in their new lives here.

Since 2021 the Women's Garden Project have been helping vulnerable women of a refugee and asylum seeker background - many of them are living in a hotel room, in a ‘refugee bubble’ and find it hard to integrate into the community, so being able to access a safe, tranquil and beautiful green space every week and enjoy different activities, has helped their wellbeing enormously. They were very proud share their produce and part in last year’s Foodival in Tooting.

Local women can join the Garden Project as volunteers - so members of the Women’s Garden Project will get a chance to meet more people from different backgrounds and find out more about our fabulous community. No gardening knowledge is required - this will be more about befriending, social inclusion, a sense of community and improved wellbeing. We are also hoping to help them with open days, activities and events over the year for all the community and will promote these on social media.

This project is being partially funded by Furzedown FACE and also Thinking Works, the sustainable energy company, but more money is needed to continue after the summer and into next year. They welcome donations, new volunteers and other sponsors.
